...acids by breaking apart
complete proteins and simply metabolizing the other amino acids or dismissing
them from your body as waste.
If I've confused you, I want to un-confuse you. I want you to understand this.
Let me make it a bit simpler. Carb intake is severely reduced. Your body wants
for glucose beyond that being supplied so it makes its own. It uses amino acids
as the raw material. To get those amino acids, it must break down either
dietary protein . . . or muscle tissue!
If you are taking in enough protein for muscle synthesis, enough protein that
would normally allow you to build new healthy cells, in a state of carb
depletion you'll likely sacrifice some of those proteins to manufacture
glucose. That gives you intake of protein below that which you need to maintain
lean body mass so muscle breaks down and is not repaired. Once you've exhausted
your dietary protein supply, your body goes somewhere...

...suggesting that I was inventing or imagining things. In fact, he strongly suspected a non-specific connective tissue disease akin to lupus - maybe mixed connective tissue disease, maybe dermatomyositis, maybe even lupus, though repeated (and very extensive) tests were negative for this. He did find that in addition to the high “sed” rate, I had an elevated “CPK” level - CPK stands for an enzyme thrown off into the blood by wasting or inflamed muscle tissue. But we had no real explanations. Though eventually the crippling fatigue abated, it never went completely away, nor did any of my other symptoms; they simply waxed and waned. I’d have a period of good days - a “remission” - and then sit back in resignation while whatever this thing was moved in again. Thankfully, my hair stopped falling out, but would never grow back. I wasn’t the only one around who had bizarre, annoying,...

...problem for now is how to keep it continuously powered. They quote an engineer as saying "there's a dirty little secret in the next room" (refering to naval salvage robots and Disney's animatronic pirate robots). "Electrical stuff has a big generator somewhere. Hydraulics has a hidden motor and pump. With this machine (the exoskeleton), you don't get to have that dirty secret." Current thought is to base any power system on the same concept as human muscle tissue which are very efficient, but clearly this is in the experimental stage. Also, something said once by an A-10 pilot comes to mind; That there will always be a "low-tech" side to war. (He was bemoaning the coming retirement and demise of his aircraft in the U.S. Air Force.) Computers are wonderful machines but very susceptible to corruption and disruption. For all its added advantage, I might be a bit concerned about having my life rely on such a...

...without any external source of power. The work is a dramatic example of the marriage of biotechnology with the tiny world of nanotechnology. In nanotechnology, researchers often turn to the natural world for inspiration. But Professor Carlo Montemagno, of the University of California, Los Angeles, turns to nature not for ideas, but for actual starting materials. In the past he has made rotary nano-motors out of genetically engineered proteins. Now he has grown muscle tissue onto tiny robotic skeletons. Living device Montemano's team used rat heart cells to create a tiny device that moves on its own when the cells contract. A second device looks like a minute pair of frog legs. "The bones that we're using are either a plastic or they're silicon based," he said. "So we make these really fine structures that mechanically have hinges that allow them to move and bend. "And then by nano-scale manipulation of...

...a higher dose of its experimental compound PTC124 in approximately 12 boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) caused by a premature stop codon mutation. The drug is designed to coax muscle cells to ignore these mutations and make functional dystrophin. In October, the company announced that, in a trial of 26 boys with DMD, the drug appeared safe and well tolerated. Results showed significant decreases in serum creatine kinase (CK), which leaks out of damaged muscle tissue, and increases in dystrophin. In the higher-dose study, boys will take the drug at 20 milligrams per kilogram of body weight at breakfast and lunch and 40 milligrams per kilogram at dinner for 28 days. They’ll be followed closely for an additional 28 days and periodically after that. Participants must have a documented premature stop codon mutation in the dystrophin gene, be at least 5 years old and meet other study criteria. Contact...

...like melanoma are known to spread to the heart. That being said, it is somewhat curious why certain tissues are less susceptible to cancer. This is typically ascribed to the belief that the more cells that are actively dividing in an organ or tissue the less likely that organ or tissue will have a cancer arise in it. So skin, intestine and bone marrow which have high populations of dividing cells are more often to have a cancer arise in their cells than the heart whose muscle tissue is essentially non-dividing. ----- Jeff

...the breasts to look less full or sag. Plastic surgery offers safe, natural-looking implants that return your breasts to their youthful contour. Your plastic surgeon can perform breast augmentation on an outpatient basis, with either local or general anesthetic. The small incisions are virtually undetectable, usually made under each breast, around the nipples or in the armpits. Implants may be inserted just under the gland of the breast or beneath the muscle tissue. Stitches are removed after approximately one week. Some women experience extensive swelling in their breasts during pregnancy. In addition to postpartum loss of fat tissue, swelling can cause the skin to stretch and sag. And no amount of exercise will re-tighten this skin. An outpatient procedure called "mastopexy" can remove excess skin and reduce sagging. www.phudson.com/postpartum.html Krotko mowiac...
